Aubrey's birthday fell on Fast Sunday this year, which meant that she didn't have the traditional breakfast in bed. Instead, we planned to have her come home from church, climb into pjs, and then receive her "breakfast in bed" at 2 p.m.
It didn't quite work out that way, but she was flexible. At church we realized that some good friends needed to spend the day in the hospital with their oldest son, so we invited their four younger kids to come over to our house. When the friends came to drop the younger kids off, we invited them to share some of our piping hot french toast with buttermilk syrup. They were happy to get some lunch, but poor Aubrey . . . we had her breakfast in bed tray ready to transport upstairs but got distracted by the company. Eventually she came downstairs where she enjoyed her brunch with the rest of us.
Then, as our house resounded with the cacophony of five kids under the age of 9 running and screaming, Dan, Bailey, and I sneaked into Aubrey's room where we presented her with her gifts.
(How is it that kids always sense a locked door? As soon as we quietly locked Aubrey's door we had little hands knock, knock, knocking at the door. Once we opened it up and they could see we weren't doing anything all that fun, they took off again).
Aubrey received some vocal solo musical anthology books - two from us and two from Grandma and Grandpa Springer!
And she received the Insurgent series, which she AND Bailey were excited to read!
Aubrey spent much of her birthday playing and singing from her many songbooks.
Aubrey had requested tacos for her birthday dinner Sunday night. Sadly, her dinner was also overshadowed. Our friends returned from the hospital to pick up their kids, exhausted and hungry. After visiting for a few minutes we whipped up the taco meal and served everyone. In the craziness, however, Aubrey didn't get her special birthday recognition and couldn't even find an available chair at which to sit during the dinner! It was really lousy for her. After everybody left we gathered for prayers and everyone shared things they love about Aubrey (a birthday tradition).
Because her breakfast in bed and birthday dinner were a little less than birthday special, on Joseph's birthday (two days later) I surprised her with french toast breakfast in bed again after giving Joseph his breakfast.
But, don't feel TOO sorry for Aubrey and her overshadowed birthday. She had two upcoming birthday celebrations in the next few weeks!
One of her birthday presents was a shopping trip to an accessory store called Charming Charlie and lunch at Olive Garden with her best friend.
On the way home they took goofy iphone pics.
Then, Laura's mom and I took Aubrey and Laura for a joint birthday trip to the beauty school to get manicures, pedicures, and hairdos.
After the girls were beautified, we ate lunch at Subway.
Then the girls headed back to our house to get ready to attend the Stake Dance - Aubrey's first Stake Dance.
Bailey showed her big sister awesomeness and took the girls for ice cream before the dance and helped Aubrey get acclimated. Bailey report that Aubrey danced "a million times." I guess she had a good time!
